2018 Summer Ministry Intern

St. John’s United Methodist Church is pleased to announce an intensive ministry internship that spans the summer months (Late May – Mid August). This 13 week, part-time, salaried internship is designed for young adults who are exploring a vocation in ministry.

The internship will include an opportunity to experience a range of ministerial responsibilities under the supervision of the Lead Pastor, who will serve as the mentor. Together, the intern and mentor will create a Ministry Covenant outlining learning goals and objectives, and will participate in regular reflection. The intern will also work closely with other members of the pastoral and program staff, as appropriate.

The intern will receive $2000, to be paid semi-monthly during the 13-week internship.

Objectives of the Internship

The internship seeks to prepare young people to hear God’s call to ordained ministry by placing them in the context of a ministry setting and allowing them to shadow a clergyperson.

This position exists for the mutual benefit of St. John’s United Methodist Church and the intern. St. John’s receives an individual who can offer their own set of skills, knowledge, interests, and passions to support and enhance the ministries of the church. In turn, the intern receives the opportunity to learn and practice ministry in a safe and nurturing environment as the intern continues to discern a call to ministry.

Time Commitment

The intern can expect to work an average of approximately 20-25 hours per week, including Sundays and some Saturdays, with additional hours required during Vacation Bible School (June 25-29) and Youth Week (TBD).

The intern’s participation is required during the following times each week:
  • Sunday morning worship and Sunday School (approximately 8:00 am to 12:15 pm)
  • Sunday evening activities, including Youth Group (approximately 4:30 pm to 7:30pm)
  • Staff Meeting on Tuesdays (approximately 9:30 am to 11:00 am)

Remaining hours will be flexibly scheduled with the Lead Pastor to reach approximately 20-25 hours/week and facilitate other scheduling needs during the summer.

Vacation: Six paid days off (one Sunday).

Qualifications

Preferred candidates for the Ministry Internship shall have completed at least their freshman year of college or be minimum of 19 years old. The internship is open to those considering vocational ministry as well as those considering other careers. The intern should show evidence of personal and spiritual maturity, an understanding of Christian discipleship through the lens of United Methodism, people-skills for working with volunteers and a heart of service to others.

In addition, he or she must also be a person of faith, embodying high moral and ethical standards and integrity, and adhere to the Safe Sanctuary policy of the church.
