Seeking Nursery Workers

Job Description: Nursery Worker – Paid Staff

Principle Function:

Provides for the physical, emotional and intellectual stimulation and safety of children ages 0-4 years and elementary aged children while working in the church’s nurseries. Reports to the Director of Discipleship and Connection.

General Qualifications:
  1. Be of good moral and Christian character.
  2. Be polite, friendly and courteous to all children, parents, and volunteers.
  3. Speak in a gentle tone of voice to the children.
  4. Stability of physical, mental and emotional health.
  5. Knowledge of the age appropriate needs for children 0-4 years and elementary aged children.
  6. Ability to adapt and interact with a variety of personalities/characteristics common to children ages 0-4 years and elementary aged children.
  7. Active willingness to advance personal knowledge of nursery care for children 0-4 years and elementary aged children (i.e. seminars, readings, etc.)
  8. Willingness to submit to background checks and drug screenings.
  9. Absences will be communicated in advance to the Director of Discipleship and Connection or in his/her absence the Lead Pastor.
Requirements:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent
Essential Duties:
  1. Abides by all Safe Sanctuary policies of St. John’s UMC at all times.
  2. Maintains current first aid/CPR training for infants and children.
  3. Greets each child and calls him/her by name when dropped off by parents(s)/guardian.
  4. Completes Nursery Registration Records and communicates special needs to volunteers and the Director of Discipleship and Connection.
  5. Arrives on time to the nursery, AT LEAST 15 minutes prior to the service or event for which they are scheduled. Stays until all children are secured with a responsible adult named on the child’s registration form.
  6. Cleans and disinfects toys each Sunday (only toys played with on that Sunday) after children have left.
  7. Abide by the nursery policies and classroom expectations (see handbook)
  8. Maintains good hand washing/hand hygiene after diaper changes and after assisting children with tissues for coughs, sneezes or runny noses.
  9. Wears latex free gloves while changing diapers, utilizes wax paper barrier and disinfects diaper changing area after each diaper change.
  10. Makes sure children are kept clean and in fresh diapers.
  11. Labels all sippy cups with child’s name and tries to ensure that children drink from their own cup.
  12. Communicates needs for supplies, snacks, etc. to the DOD&C.
  13. Engages children in organized activities while staying in the nursery, i.e. age appropriate songs, stories, lessons, crafts, etc.
  14. Ensures safety of the nursery environment, i.e. cleaning products and medications stored out of reach of children, outlet covers on electrical outlets, etc.
  15. Keeps confidences as a sacred trust.
  16. Teaches provided Sunday School activities for toddlers in the toddler nursery.
  17. Other duties as assigned.
Miscellaneous:

Communicates absences in advance, by phone or by email, to the DOD&C.

  1. Request for time off must be given at least two weeks ahead of time.
  2. In the case of last-minute illness, he or she must contact the DOD&C by phone 1 hour prior to his/her shift so a replacement may be found.

Nursery workers report to the DOD&C and the Lead Pastor.
The DOD&C will conduct a job performance at least every 6 months.
Paid nursery workers are expected to work holidays that fall on Sunday, (i.e Christmas and Easter), as well as Christmas Eve, and may be asked to work additional hours during busy times (i.e. Holy week, Advent/Christmas, Vacation Bible School).

Termination Policy:
Dependability is essential. Habitual tardiness and excessive unscheduled absences may result in termination of employment.
  1. There will be a six-month probationary period where either party may, with a two-week notice, terminate without cause.
  2. Immediate termination will occur in cases of intentional verbal, physical or emotional abuse or neglect of any child, parent or church member.
  3. Nursery workers will be terminated if they fail to follow nursery policies or in situations of excessive absence or habitual tardiness.
Support provided to nursery workers:
To create a cooperative working environment, St. John’s will:
  1. Immediately seek to rectify any problems that may arise.
  2. Allow nursery workers to take grievances to the DOD&C or Lead Pastor.
  3. Welcome suggestions of how to improve our nursery ministry.
  4. Compensate fairly.
  5. Conduct job performance appraisals every six months.
  6. Fund first aid/CPR training fees annually.
  7. Provide an appropriately furnished nursery including rocking chairs, table and chairs, cribs, changing area, toys and supplies.
