St. John’s UMC Seeks Youth Ministry Coordinator

We are seeking an energetic individual with a passion for youth faith formation to lead our middle and high school youth programs. The position is part-time (20 hours per week) and includes flexible scheduling, with Sunday mornings and evenings required. Program enjoys strong congregational and parental support.

Successful candidates will have experience leading/teaching youth, an evident faith, strong organizational and communication skills, ability to recruit and manage volunteers. Pay commensurate with experience. A complete position description is found below.

Youth Ministry Coordinator at St. John's United Methodist Church

The Youth Ministry Coordinator is called to help build disciples for Christ by implementing a comprehensive approach to youth in grades 6 through 12 by serving as a spiritual leader and role model by leading and directing Youth programming to helping youth grow spiritually in the way of Jesus. This is accomplished by providing a welcoming, competent, Spirit-led staff presence at youth ministry programs; inspiring youth, volunteers and parents to live faithfully and joyfully into the calling of ministry with youth; and engaging in cooperative ministry planning and implementation along with the Director of Discipleship and Connection.

Description and Responsibilities:

  • Presents pertinent information about the Youth Ministry to parents and youth in an accurate and engaging way.
  • Plans and implements Youth Ministry events and rites of passage in coordination with the Director of Discipleship and Connection as well as Parent-Youth Council. This includes the summer mission trips, Youth Week, small groups, retreats and mission efforts.
  • Maintains calendars and communicates information in an effective and timely manner. The details of the Youth Ministry programs, meetings, special events, etc. are well organized and publicized.
  • Recruits all volunteers serving in the Youth Ministry and provides training and support for those volunteers. This includes youth Sunday School teachers, summer Youth Intern(s), and volunteers for Sunday evening youth meetings, trips and special events.
  • Provides teachers and volunteers with materials, curriculum, registration information, and needed equipment.
  • Maintains and distributes control and compliance documents in a timely fashion. Control documents include Youth Directory, Volunteer Job Descriptions, Youth Ministry Calendar, Event and Trip Registration forms, and Leader Directories. Compliance documents include copyright licensing and background checks on volunteers.
  • Manages and works within a budget, and coordinates fundraising activities to support special youth activities and trips.
  • Is an active part of St. John’s church community and life, and as such participates in worship. Supports the church through prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. Encourages others in participation of all facets of church life.
  • Maintains regularly scheduled office hours in order to be accessible to parents, youth and staff.
  • Collects and distributes attendance for Youth Ministry programming to the Director of Discipleship & Connection and tracks attendance monthly to identify youth and families who have been absent. Youth age children and their families who have been absent from St. John’s programming for one month or more receive warm, caring follow-up from a member of the Youth Ministry Team.
  • Provides new families with youth timely, welcoming follow-up that naturally encourages their future involvement in the life of St. John’s and its Youth Ministry.
  • Encourages and facilitates involvement in spiritual formation opportunities offered outside our local church through our United Methodist connection.
  • Attends staff meetings and any other meetings deemed appropriate by the Director of Discipleship & Connection and the Lead Pastor.

Time Commitment: 20 hours per week, additional hours as required for overnight retreats, lock-ins, mission trips, and special events.

Special Talents, Skills Preferred: Education and/or experience with middle school or high school age youth, maturity, delegation, organization, communication, administration, creativity, and a Passion for and Love of Youth.

Resources and Training Provided: Ongoing continuing education opportunities and the annual Safe Sanctuaries training. First Aid/CPR Training.
