We are accepting entries for A Taste of St. John's, our second annual cooking & baking competition to be held on Sunday July 31, in the Family Life Center. Prepared dishes, with enough for 8 servings, should arrive by 5 p.m. for judging. Ice cream for all will be served at 6 p.m. when winners will be announced.

You can submit a paper form to the church office. Each entry is $5, and you can submit your payment to the church office (checks should be made out to St. John's UMC, with The Taste in the memo line). Winning entries from 2015 are not eligible for judging; however, recipes that did not place can be entered in this year's contest.

Timeline for Sunday July 31:
  • Entries with form completed and $5 may be dropped off at the FLC as early as 4 p.m. and no later than 5 p.m. (If you have an item to be picked up during the week please contact Rhonda or Danielle, and we will make sure it gets to church OR you can leave items in the kitchen on Sunday with your name and marked for Taste of St. John’s)
  • Judges - to be a judge bring $5 and be at the FLC at 5 p.m.
  • Fellowship, ice cream and the announcement of the winners please be at the FLC by 6 p.m.

Entries will be judged on presentation, originality/creativity and overall impression/flavor. You need not be present to win! You may enter as many dishes as you'd like. Simply complete a separate form for each recipe.

Want to be a judge? Sign up during coffee time for a $5 donation. Let us know, and note "Taste - Judge" on your check.

All recipes (including those from 2015) will be compiled in the future as A Taste of St. John’s Cookbook and sold.

This year our event will be supporting the Lydia Patterson Institute. The Louisiana Annual Conference Board of Laity voted to join their fundraising for Church Starts with the conference efforts that are supported by our apportionments; St. John's will be supporting this endeavor.

The Lydia Patterson Institute, located in El Paso, Texas, is committed to providing an environment in which Christian faith, values and knowledge converge to give students a cross-cultural, academic and state-of-the-art education, by creating opportunities to develop skills to succeed and transform a changing world. Founded in 1913, it offers programs for Spanish-speaking children, primarily from Juarez, to attend high school in the United States and attend an American undergraduate university. All high school classes are taught in English, and the school is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

View photos from last year's event in our Taste of St. John's Flickr album.

  Be Welcomed. Be Loved.

We are a Christian community called to share our gifts through worship, witness and service so that others will know God and become disciples of Jesus Christ.
