Construction Updates

The Walk - Consecration Services, May 2017

We celebrated the completion of The Burch Bell Tower, the Narthex, and the renovation of the sanctuary on May 20 and 21.

On Saturday, May 20 we celebrated a Service of Consecration. Worship began in the Family Life Center, then moved to the Burch Bell Tower and finally our new sanctuary! This was a beautiful evening of celebration and worship for our church family and friends. After the service, St. John's United Methodist Women served cookies and punch in the Family Life Center.

On Sunday, May 21 we held our first regular 8:30 and 11:00 worship services in the sanctuary. Following worship, we continued the celebration with a potluck lunch in the Family Life Center. After the meal, we split into groups to pray over our new spaces and concluded with special music in the sanctuary. This was an amazing weekend to fellowship together, celebrate and pray.

The Walk Update - January 2017 Update

On October 25, 2016, we completed the first year of our three-year giving commitment to The Walk, a two-phased project that renovated the gym into our Family Life Center and is now adding a Narthex, completing our covered walk way and renovating our sanctuary. As a congregation we pledged $961,600. We have received in pledges, contributions, and donations to the Narthex $521,000 as of December 2016. Our total project is expected to cost between $1.4 and $1.5 million. The total amount collected is one third of the total needed to complete the project. We see evidence of your generosity and God's faithfulness in the shapes that are beginning to form in front of the Sanctuary! With the exception of some rainy days at the beginning of this month, work has been making great progress! Let's say a prayer of thanks to all those that are making our vision come to life through their talents! Thank you St. John's for being faithful in giving to The Walk. If you have not given and would like to be a part of this exciting time at St. John's, please contact the church office.

The Walk - Phase II Groundbreaking Ceremony

On September 18, 2016, after on worship service we broke ground on phase 2 of The Walk. We also announced great news about the bell tower and its bell.

The Burch family has generously donated funds to construct the bell tower. In their honor the tower will be named the Burch Bell Tower. Tom and Martha Burch were founding members of St. John's.

Randy Thayer and his family have donated the actual bell to be used in the tower. The bell weighs 330 pounds and was built around 1890.

Thank you again to the Burch family and the Thayer family for their generous donations to The Walk. Please continue to support The Walk through your pledges and consider an additional donation toward the Burch Bell Tower in memory of Martha and/or in honor of Tom.

The Walk Update - September 11, 2016

On the rainy day of Sunday, August 14, we announced the date for our groundbreaking service. Since that day, St. John’s has been a blessing to our community; feeding people both spiritually and physically by opening our doors as a shelter and then again by opening the Family Life Center to recovery teams and their efforts. Also, since that day, the Building Committee has signed a contract with Miremont- Schoonmaker for the construction of Phase II of The Walk.

Over these past three years, I have prayed for signs that we, as a study group, we, as a church, or we, as a building committee were taking the right step in our walk. As you can imagine there have been lots of decisions to make during each phase of the process. One decision, early on, was when we met to brainstorm a name for our project, on that evening I believe God was truly present in the room with us. I cannot describe in adequate words how we felt, but the whole committee had goosebumps when the scripture from second Corinthians chapter 5 verse 7 was placed on our hearts. Another decision was when the Building Committee had to decide where to begin: the sanctuary or the Family Life Center, as you all know choosing to complete the Family Life Center first was a good decision as confirmed by all that we have been able to do to feed people both spiritually and physically since August 14. My examples could go on and on from the over three years that I have worked on this project. I have to keep remembering God IS IN every detail and He has unfailingly, confirmed our next step or direction. As we move forward with the second phase of our project, in the midst of change for many people, I had one more confirmation that we were on the right path, I can’t spill the beans on this one yet, but I will give you a hint: it is about the bell that will be hanging in our bell tower and the bell tower itself.

As we approach the one year anniversary of The Walk we have collected 32% of the $961,000 pledged. St. John’s, thank you for letting me receive so many blessings from our efforts these past three years, you continue to amaze me. You are truly a people who are walking by faith and NOT by sight! Thank you! --Danielle Blackwood

The Walk Update - August 2016

One of the scripture readings for today -- I think the one Pastor Jay will be preaching on -- comes from Hebrews. The letter to the Hebrews is a reminder of the faithful acts of the people of the Old Testament.

The letter goes on to tell the people that they to can lay aside the weights they carry and run the race with perseverance. Here at St. John’s I believe we are living this faith right now. We are walking by faith to complete the second phase of our project. We are fast approaching the one year mark of our first year of giving.

Thank you to the communications team for creating our giving thermometer. Right now we have received about 23% of the $961,000 pledged. This is wonderful news, but remember the projects plus the previous debt is $1.5 million. Please continue to fulfill your pledge, and if you haven’t pledged please consider a contribution today!

As always, please continue to pray for The Walk, for we walk by faith not by sight.

The Walk Update - July 2016

On May 22, we dedicated the Family Life Center by having the 25th Annual Silent Auction and crawfish boil. Since then the Family Life Center has been the home to The Shepherd’s Market, a trial run for Sunday services, Vacation Bible School activities and beautiful celebrations of life for our church family.

As we work to close the first phase of the project for the Walk we wanted to give you an update of the accounting to date. The total cost of the construction for the Family Life Center including the majority of the general contractor, Audio/visual and electrical is $473,550. Contributions to The Walk through June are $295,000. The balance owed is being paid through the approved line of credit.

The next phase of The Walk is on its way! The bid book is out to several contractors. Bids are due on July 28. Soon after the bids are received the building committee, which is chaired by Phil Slicker, will meet to open the bids and choose the contractor. As soon as a contractor is chosen and start dates are firm we will notify the congregation.

Phase II of The Walk will include continuing the covered walkway, a bell tower, a Narthex and renovation of the sanctuary. We believe the cost of this phase to be close to $800,000. Many of you have been on this Walk with us as we have prayed, planned and prayed some more. Many of you have made a commitment to financially support The Walk. For that commitment we thank you and we encourage you to continue that commitment. Many of you are new to The Walk and we would like to invite you to join with us. To contribute to The Walk please see Jay or Danielle or contact the church office.

As we continue on this walk we pray that our efforts allow us to glorify God, to feed people both spiritually and physically and to make disciples for the transformation of the world. Please pray for St. John’s to walk by faith and not by sight.

Green Light!

Monday night, February 15, 2016, offered another point of celebration for our church. Our Parish Planning and Zoning Commission Meeting gave us our final green light - St. John's UMC is now fully approved to construct and renovate! Thanks be to God for the approval given, and thanks to our church family for the prayerful support and encouragement. Now, let's grow!

The Walk Update - February 2016

The work on the gym has BEGUN!! The gym work is beginning with the removal of the inside paneling. See some pictures in our Flickr album for The Walk.

In December the Building Committee signed an agreement with Miremont-Schoonmaker to be the general contractor for Phase I of The Walk, renovations to the gym.

Three months after submitting our building permit to the City Planning Commission the committee learned we needed a conditional use permit. Our architect, Bob Lunsford, has provided the necessary items the Commission required.

At the February 15 City Planning Commission meeting, Bob will present the requested information, which should result in them granting us our permit. This positive action by the Commission will allow us to move forward. Some good news - our contractor now estimates that completion time will be three and a half months rather than our projected five months.

The Building Committee continues to work with Bob as we have already started discussing Phase II of The Walk -- sanctuary renovations and constructing a walkway extension and Narthex.

  Be Welcomed. Be Loved.

We are a Christian community called to share our gifts through worship, witness and service so that others will know God and become disciples of Jesus Christ.
