Our Vision

In 5 years, St. John’s UMC will be known as a center for feeding people both spiritually and physically in our community.

Glorifying God, Feeding People, Making Disciples

St. John’s United Methodist Church is located in South Baton Rouge at the corner of Renee Drive and Highland Road. We have a three-mile mission field that includes the Gardere Lane and Mayfair neighborhoods, two communities that face the challenges of poverty, education deficits, language barriers, housing blight and employment shortages.

Our campus is also centrally located to Louisiana State University and other affluent neighborhoods. In these areas of town that people are underchurched or not churched at all. People may be looking for a place to serve but not aware of the opportunities at St. John’s UMC.

God has placed the call of feeding people on our hearts. The Shepherd’s Market is feeding families physically on our campus. Our neighbors who are fed receive not only groceries to feed their families but also a meal each time they visit. The Shepherd’s Market is a project of Opening Doors, a Louisiana Non-Profit Corporation.

We have embraced the vision to feed people not only physically but also spiritually. Our location places us in a unique position to achieve our vision.

Proposal, Phase I:

  • Renovate the Gym and transition it to a Family Life Center that would maintain the athletic facilities and would allow for comfortable use of fellowship events
  • Install heating and air condition
  • Additional storage
  • Upgrade lighting and flooring
  • Add audio-visual capabilities

Proposal, Phase II:

  • Add a Narthex, complete with restrooms and a multipurpose room
  • Complete the covered walkway from the Administration building to the Narthex
  • Add a drive for dropping off and picking up from worship
  • Renovate the sanctuary, including paint, audio-visual capabilities, refurbishing pews, reupholstering the cushions, flooring and lighting updates

Imagine:

  • Greeting people at both the north and south ends of campus warmly and effectively
  • Having an updated presence on Highland Road that brings us closer to the people
  • Allowing for handicapped accessibility
  • Storage
  • More effective worship spaces

  Be Welcomed. Be Loved.

We are a Christian community called to share our gifts through worship, witness and service so that others will know God and become disciples of Jesus Christ.
