A Cure for Sorrow:
An Online Retreat to Meet our Grief
Tuesdays, September 15, 22, 29 at 7:00 p.m. on Zoom
Led by Pastor Lane
Seasons of uncertainty of any kind are cause for grief and anxiety. This season of prolonged uncertainty is grieving our hearts all the more, whether we recognize and name those feelings of grief or not. Add to that the many losses we have each witnessed: from the loss of loved ones and members of our community, to the loss of normalcy, to the losses of income or long-anticipated milestones or a much-needed rest…and we are a people beset by grief.
As the church, we are uniquely graced with the ability and the responsibility to hold one another in that grief through our gathering in community. In that spirit, we invite you to join us for a 3-part online retreat led by Rev. Lane Cotton Winn with Jan Richardson’s The Cure for Sorrow: A Book of Blessings for Times of Grief.
The three sessions will be held on Tuesday evenings, September 15, 22, and 29 at 7:00 p.m. over Zoom and will be part discussion and part workshop, making space for us to craft the blessings we each most need to hear for ourselves in this season. Feel free to invite friends to join us; meeting over Zoom expands our ability to join with kindred spirits well beyond those who could normally join us in person.
Details & Registration
An ordained elder in the United Methodist Church, Rev. Jan Richardson has been writing blessings for years. When she unexpectedly lost her husband and creative partner, this book of blessings and poetry is what emerged from the depths of her own grief. The book’s description accurately claims, “Those who know loss will find kinship among these pages.” Grief is achingly specific, and so these blessings naturally speak of Richardson’s own experience. However, the solace they offer can be felt no matter what personal loss brings us to encounter them.
The book is available online immediately as a Kindle eBook as well as on Amazon Prime. Please order your own copy of the book from your favorite book seller. Scholarships are available, too. Just send an email to Pastor Lane if a scholarship is needed.
There are 3 sections in the book. and we’ll work with one section per session, lifting up a few poems each time. Reading each section in advance is recommended but not essential to be able to participate. My advice is to break it up and read 1 or 2 blessings at a time, perhaps in the morning and evening, to really give them a chance to sink in.
Register online. Registration for this retreat is free, but you will be required to register to be able to join the Zoom. Feel free to contact Pastor Lane with any questions. We hope this will be a hospitable space for all that we are feeling and processing, and we look forward to seeing you there.
